Last Updated 05 October 2012, 20:25 IST

Protesting against release of water from river Cauvery to Tamil Nadu, the district JD(S) unit members staged a protest by laying siege on the Harangi reservoir in Kushalnagar on Friday.

The JD(S) leaders B A Jeevijaya, V P Shashidhar, and others led the protest. The protesters flayed the move of the State government by closing the main gate of the reservoir and shouted slogans against the State government.

JD(S) district president V P Shashidhar said letting water to Tamil Nadu is not a right decision.

The release of water should be stopped. He urged the authorities not to release water from Harangi reservoir in the interest of the farmers of the catchment area.
The water should be stored in the reservoir to help the farmers to grow crops during summer.

Former minister B A Jeevijaya accused the State government for neglecting the interest of the farmers. “The Central team should visit the Cauvery catchment area to assess the situation. The BJP government in busy in internal fight when the State is reeling under drought situation. The BJP can not take up any pro farmers programmes,” he said. A memorandum was submitted to the government through Harangi Reservoir AEE.
