Man fires in air after wedding called off

A 30-year-old man was arrested for firing in the air to threaten the family of his fiancee after they decided to call off their wedding at Tilak Nagar in west Delhi.

Aman Harvinder Singh, a Sant Garh resident, was pressurising the woman’s parents and also threatened them of dire consequences, said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

“On interrogation, Aman revealed that he was inspired by a Bollywood movie in which the hero threatened heroine for marriage and also fired gunshots to get her consent,” said Renganathan.

The action was taken after a call was made to the police control room on Wednesday regarding firing in front of a house in Sant Nagar Extension. Police found an empty cartridge on the spot and registered a case over the statement of Inderjeet Kaur.

According to Inderjeet, her daughter was engaged to Harvinder in April. But his criminal history came in between their marriage.

“The proposal for marriage was subsequently rejected from the woman’s side. Hence, the accused reached the house of his fiancée on Wednesday evening and exchanged heated words with the woman’s parents,” Renganathan added.

As the woman’s family refused to budge, Aman, in a fit of anger, opened fire in the street and fled from the spot.

An information was received that the 30-year-old was likely to come at Keshopur Sabzi Mandi in Tilak Nagar on Thursday.

“A raiding team was formed and Aman was arrested. He disclosed that he was involved in the case and a pistol was recovered from his possession,” Renganathan said.

A case under section 506 (criminal intimidation) under Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act has been lodged against Aman.
