Nov 30 is Chess Day in high schools: Kageri

World Chess Day will be observed on November 30 in all high schools across the State.

Chess is believed to play a vital role in improving cognitive abilities, rational thinking and reasoning among children, said Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, here on Tuesday.

A circular has been issued to the officials, he said, adding that Chess Day will be observed in 15,000 high schools, including government, aided and unaided schools across the State under the title  ‘Chaduranga Aata Aadi, Chaturaraagi’(‘Play Chess and bcome intelligent’).

Teachers have been directed to inform students about the history of chess game and its significance. This apart, they have been asked to train students in the game. Chess competition will also be organised at school level on the same day, said Kageri.

Library project

Another programme, ‘Tegeyiri Pustaka Horage - Hanchiri Jnanada Deevige’, will be launched on November 7, with an objective to develop a habit of utilising library in all primary  and high schools. 

Students should read stories, novels, quiz books and books on various other topics apart from their textbooks, he said. Libraries, which will be called ‘Shala Shradhdha Vachanalaya’, will be developed in the schools.

If necessary, School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) members can seek financial assistance from alumni and people to purchase furniture for library.

The State government has provided a grant of Rs 50 crore to purchase books, he added.
