First 8-coach Metro to operate by November

Last Updated 27 October 2012, 19:36 IST

Delhi Metro is all set to bring in its first eight coach train by November-end, said Metro officials.

“The trial run is going on and the first eight coach train will be operational within a month,” said Mangu Singh, managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. However, DMRC has not decided yet whether the eight coach train will begin operating from the yellow or blue line.

DMRC is planning to induct 68 eight coach trains on the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City (yellow) and Noida City Centre-Dwarka Sector 21 (blue) lines by next year.

“The conversion process will begin in November and it will take about a year to complete it. There will be two months trial as well,” said a Metro official.

To provide convenience to passengers, the new coaches will be added to the existing four and six coach trains.

Additionally, 25 six coach trains will become operational on the Jahangirpuri line and 40 six coach trains on the Noida City line. Since August 2010, Bombardier has been delivering the last consignment of 76 cars which are to be used for conversion of four-coach trains into eight-coach trains. The 600th Movia Car was delivered to DMRC on October 23. The last car is likely to be delivered in December.

As per statistics provided by DMRC officials, a four-coach train can carry approximately 1,480 passengers. This number can be increased to 2,220 passengers in a six-coach train and 2,960 passengers in an eight-coach train. There are nearly 100 six coach trains and 100 four coach trains with DMRC at present.
