Girl student stabbed to death, class mate injured

A girl student of a primary school was stabbed to death while another boy was critically wounded allegedly by a knife-wielding man within the school premises at Diggilota in West Singhbhum district today, police said.

The students were attending classes when Madan Gope, who lives a little distance away from the school campus, suddenly rushed into the building brandishing a knife and lunged towards Simnath Diggi and six-year-old girl Jasmine Murmu, both students of the primary school, the sources said.

Jasmine was fatally injured while Simnath was taken to Chakradharpur Sadar Hospital and then referred to Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur.

Following the incident, the villagers caught hold of Gope and thrashed him before he was handed over to the police.

Police said the accused person appeaed to be mentally unstable.

The teachers were away to attend a booth committee meeting.
