'Reverse hawala' moolah for US election

Last Updated 03 November 2012, 20:04 IST

Dr Sushil Kumar Verma, who retired from Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), is neither related to US Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Still, a large sum of money was reportedly transferred from his savings account in Axis Bank to Romney’s bank account.

At least this is what he was told when he went to the bank to lodge a protest how a sum of Rs 3,52,546 had been shown as transferred to the US presidential poll hopeful. On investigation, it was found that cyber crime experts had used his pin code on October 10 and reportedly transferred the amount to Romney’s account.

Verma eventually lodged a complaint at the SK Puri police station in the state capital. The police after talking to the bank officials and the complainant said that prima facie it appeared to be a high-profile cyber crime.

“The mischief-maker has not only hacked Verma’s savings account and used his pin code to transfer the money, but it is also likely that Romney’s account too might have been hacked and the swindled amount withdrawn by the cyber criminal,” said the investigating officer of the case.

The cop did not rule out the lax approach of the banks’ IT section officials and said only after thorough inquiry he would be able to shed more light.
