A 29-year-old Albanian woman was found hanging in a hotel room in south-east Delhi’s Greater Kailash on Friday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide, but no note was found.

According to police, a probe was initiated after Gledia Duro was found hanging with a nylon belt tied to the ceiling fan in room No 1662 of New Delhi Hotel at Greater Kailash I. She had arrived in India on October 27 on a tourist visa with her boyfriend Simon Spitz, 57, a Czech national.

They arrived in the Capital from Chennai around 3:30 pm on Friday. After checking in at the hotel, Spitz went out alone to have food. The incident came to light when he returned to the room around 6 pm. Gledia did not respond to his repeated knocks on the door.

Suspicious, Simon approached hotel authorities and later broke open the door. “Gledia was found hanging to the ceiling fan,” a police official said.

They immediately took the woman to Sukhda Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead upon arrival. A call was also made to the police control room after which a crime team inspected the room.

Police found no suicide note, but have ruled out foul play. Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (south east), said the incident was being investigated under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The body was shifted to AIIMS, where a post-mortem was conducted on Saturday. “The exact reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained. Prima facie, it appears that the deceased committed suicide,” another police officer added.
