Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Tuesday said policing will be strengthened in sensitive areas in Bangalore, Mysore and other key cities.

After inaugurating the newly constructed Hubli-Dharwad City Armed Reserve police unit’s administrative block and police quarters on Gokul Road here, Shettar said steps will be taken to increase the staff strength of the police department.

The Finance Department has been instructed to allocate more funds for creating social infrastructure for the police department.

He said Rs 50 crore has been set aside in the budget for police housing schemes and Rs one crore for the police welfare fund. The compensation to the kin of policemen, who are killed while on duty, has been increased to Rs 10 lakh from Rs three lakh.

He lauded the work of the Police Department in handling sensitive situations in the recent past, particularly during the Cauvery agitation.

Shettar told reporters in Dharwad that there is no threat from any political party or individual to his government.

He said his government will complete its full term and fulfil the promises made to the people. He refused to comment on former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s plans to float a new party.
