Last Updated 20 November 2012, 20:35 IST

Delhi government on Tuesday decided to double the amount of the rehabilitation grant given to the prisoners after their release. The quantum of rehabilitation grant would depend upon the period of incarcerated prisoner.

“Chief minister Sheila Dikshit had earlier instructed the home department to review the existing rehabilitation grant in view of the present inflationary trend as well as the financial requirement for the settlement of the prisoners after their release,” said a senior Delhi government official.

“After due consideration, the government has now decided to effect 100 per cent  hike in the existing rehabilitation grant. Further, women prisoners would be given an additional amount of Rs 5,000 as a token of affirmative consideration to them,” the government official added.

The prisoners getting released after serving a jail term of six months to five years will now be entitled to a rehabilitation grant of Rs 30,000.
