QI- am a 15-year-old girl and I am terribly worried about my increasing hair loss. Despite using a herbal hair oil I suffer from terrible hair loss. I don’t have dandruff as such. I lose hair more when I apply oil on my hair and comb it, and after I have a head bath.

A  Some amount of daily hair fall is normal. Each hair has its own cycle of growth, i.e. it has a growing stage, a resting stage, then it falls off and is replaced by another hair. You should worry only if your hair has become thinner. Some of the reasons for hair loss are dandruff, an oily scalp, stress, thyroid imbalance, illness, nutritional deficiencies, hair damage (caused by repeated dyeing, colouring, perming, straightening), etc. So, try to identify the cause in your case. You can apply a non-oily herbal hair tonic on the scalp daily, using cotton wool and leave it on. Part the hair in sections and apply on the scalp. If your hair is oily, avoid oil applications. Otherwise, apply oil once a week the night before shampoo. Avoid a head massage. If there is hair loss, the roots are already weak and massage may aggravate the problem. Diet is very important. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd, in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.
