Stray menace hits traffic

Civic woes
Last Updated 02 December 2012, 17:38 IST

Vehicle users in the city complain about a new road-block that is deterring smooth flow of traffic — stray cattle.

The number of stray cattle in the city has increased, which huddle in groups and hamper the traffic. Those who ride two-wheelers are the worse affected. The cattle are also reported to charge at pedestrians who try to shoo them away. Women and children are afraid of venturing out.

According to the Karnataka Municipal Act, citizens are not allowed to let domesticated animals such as cows, sheep and dogs outside the premises of their house. There are also laws that allow the administration to penalise animal owners who let them astray. But, the law has remained only on paper leaving pedestrians and vehicle users to suffer.
Milk

Most of the stray cows produce milk. Owners of the cattle have developed a habit of letting the cows astray after they are milked in the morning and evening.

Santhemarahalli circle, Gundlupet circle and Deviation road are the most affected areas. Since the cattle are found from early morning itself, students bound for schools and colleges also are affected.

Accidents

Raveesh, who owns a two-wheeler, complained that stray cattle are responsible for the increase in the number of accidents in the city. “The city administration should create awareness among the cattle owners and stop them from letting the animals on the roads,” he urged.
