Last Updated 09 October 2009, 19:36 IST

The Union Government has written to the states on Friday, asking them to furnish bank accounts or other relevant details of the nearest relatives who have lost their dear ones to the floods.

The sum of Rs 1 lakh compensation would then be sent directly to the surviving relatives from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

“If necessary, we would even remit the sum to the accounts online,” a source at the PMO said. The Centre had written to the states after the announcement that compensations will be provided to the flood victims from PMRF.

The Karnataka government has also announced a separate compensation of Rs 1 lakh to relatives of those killed in the flood.
