Nod sought for spending Rs 7.2 cr on ex-legislators

The State Government has sought the Legislature’s sanction to spend Rs 7.2 crore on the travel and medical expenses of former legislators. Besides, it has sought approval for spending Rs 5 crore on the maintenance of Vidhana Soudha, Vikas Soudha and VV Towers in Bangalore.

In the Supplementary Estimate (second instalment) of Rs 9197.65 crore for the fiscal 2012-13 tabled in the Legislative Assembly, the government sought to incur Rs 17.50 lakh expenditure on the maintenance of Assembly and Council secretariats. However, there is no mention of expenditure for maintaining Suvarna Soudha in Belgaum.
Sanction has also been sought for spending about Rs 5 crore to increase the House Building Allowances (HBA) for IAS officers. HBA for IAS officers has been hiked from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

The government has sought the legislature sanction to spend Rs 1,815 crore on crop loan waver;  Rs 1,250 crore on rural electrification; and Rs 3.26 crore for transport expenses of Kumara Krupa government guest house. It has also sought additional resources for hiking salaries following the implementation of Official Pay Committee recommendations.

The Assembly also passed the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and
Allowances (Third Amendment) Bill, 2012, seeking to reimburse travel expenses to former legislators up to Rs one lakh and provide pension to their family members. Another amendment to the same Act, which seeks to provide pensions to former legislators who were disqualified from their membership, was also approved.

Six bills tabled

The government tabled six bills, including the Karnataka Lifts, Escalators and Passenger Conveyors Bill, 2012, seeking to regulate persons involved in erection and maintenance of lifts, escalators and passenger conveyors in the State.

The Karnataka Nursing and Paramedical Sciences Education (Regulation) Authority Bill, 2012, seeking to incorporate an authority for  strengthening and systematic functioning of nursing and paramedical education in the State was tabled.

Besides, the Karnataka Local Authorities (Prohibition of Defection) (Amendment) Bill, 2012, the Karnataka State Commission for Safai Karmacharis Bill, 2012, and the Karnataka Souharda Sahakari (Amendment) Bill, 2012, were tabled.

Another Bill passed on Tuesday seeks to make it mandatory for owners to carry out frequent test of lifts and escalators in residential and commercial buildings.
