The Opposition parties condemned the incidents of violence that erupted in front of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday, during the legislature session on Wednesday.

They blamed the Belgaum police for attacking innocent people, displaying “unruly behaviour” for no valid reason.

The members demanded that the police immediately release the “innocent people” who had been arrested. A day after the incident, Leader of the Opposition in the Council S R Patil said the police had made a habit of “attacking only the innocent,” and that all those who had been arrested or detained were “innocent people”.

He demanded that the government constitute a fact-finding committee to ascertain who the actual culprits were and apprehend them.

Members from both the ruling and Opposition parties, including K B Shanappa, D S Veeraiah, R V Venkatesh, B Ramakrishna, Allam Prabhu Patil, Shivayogiswami and Dayanand, criticised the “extreme stance” taken by the police.

They demanded that the government immediately implement the Justice Sadashiva Commission report.

They said anti-social elements who wanted to spoil the peaceful protests by the Madiga Meesalathi Horata Samithi had succeeded in doing so, and the department should immediately order an inquiry and identify those responsible.
