For a better understanding

Informative Conference
Last Updated 17 December 2012, 14:11 IST

The staff and students of PESIT recently celebrated the institute’s silver jubilee with an international conference on multimedia processing, communication and computing applications.

“The preparations for the conference have been going on for more than a week and the students have been really busy coordinating things. It is a joint effort by the students and teachers. Final-year students have been kept away from the programmes, though, as they are having their examinations. The juniors are helping out with the conference,” says Ashwini, a student of the college.

The chief guest of the event was Cathal Gurrin from Dublin City University, Ireland. Various other delegates participated in the programme as well.

“This year’s theme for the conference is ‘Multimedia Processing and its Applications’. This conference is organised to provide a platform for researchers, both from academia and industries, to discuss and exchange their thoughts to have a better future — particularly in the field of multimedia data processing,” says P Punitha, head of MCA department.

The conference saw delegates from various countries giving lectures on topics which benefitted and informed the students. Three of these speakers had travelled from other countries to be a part of this event — Alex Hauptmann from Carnegie Mellon University, USA; Cathal Gurrin from Ireland and Sharath Pankanti from IBM, New York.

Anupam Sharma, a fifth-semester student, says that preparations for the conference began about fifteen days in advance.

“There was a lot of work — we had to print the logos, fix the design, invite the guests and make the catalogues. The response has been very good though. We have had students from many colleges attending the programme and all of them have given a positive response,” he says. Rajesh, another student, adds, “Totally, 32 colleges took part, including RVCE, MSRIT etc. The HODs of many colleges, like East West Institutions, had also attended the conference,” he adds.

Students found the conference beneficial, as it helped them know their subject better.

“It was interesting as we learnt things like encryption, decryption and the latest technology in processing,” says Prithvi, who attended the programme.
