Newly-elected legislator from Himachal Pradesh, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, absconding for the past few weeks in connection with the murder of a girl, surrendered before a Panchkula court today.

He was produced before a court which remanded him in police custody for six days.

Yesterday, the Haryana Police had announced a cash reward of Rs two lakh to anyone providing information leading to his arrest.

"The MLA has surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Panchkula, We have taken him into custody," Haryana Additional Director General of Police K K Sharma said.

The Haryana Police had also announced cash rewards of Rs 50,000 each for three other accused in the case.

A police team, headed by DCP Ambala Ashok Kumar, had been camping in Dharamsala in HP to execute fresh warrants of arrest issued by a Panchkula court on January five against the accused.

The MLA was wanted by the Haryana Police in connection with the murder of a young girl, a native of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, who was found dead in Panchkula on November 22.

The post-mortem report of the girl said she died of head injuries.

It was only after checking victim's cell phone details, the role of the MLA came under scanner, according to police.

Ram Kumar, Himachal Congress general secretary, was elected from Doon assembly constituency in Baddi in Himachal.

He is the son of four-time Congress MLA Lajja Ram.
