A notorious rowdy was shot in his leg when he attacked two cops who were on night patrol in the small hours of Tuesday.

Mohammed Dastagir alias Dastu, 22, a resident of Sarabandepalya behind Banashankari temple, sustained injuries on his left leg and was shifted to Victoria Hospital. K S Layout police constable M G Gowda Abijith was also injured in the incident and is being treated at the same hospital, police said.

Dastu is allegedly involved in 15 heinous crimes, including attempt to murder, armed robbery, extortion and chain-snatching in Kumaraswamy Layout, Jayanagar and Subramanyapura police limits.

His main targets were lone women. He robbed them during early mornings and late evenings.
The South Division police were on the lookout for him and the court had issued warrants against him in three cases registered with the Subramanyapura police.

A few months ago, Dastu had kissed and bitten the cheek of a woman before snatching her chain when she tried to retaliate.

He bit girls’ ears

He had allegedly bitten the ears of two girls in an attempt to rob them of their earrings. The victims were grievously injured, police said.

He had also barged into a shop at Sarakki Junction and robbed Devender Singh alias Rancho of his valuables on Sunday. Singh sustained injuries in the attack. An attempt-to-murder case was registered by the KS Layout police who formed a special team to nab him.

“Policemen on night duty received information that Dastu was hiding in a dilapidated house at JC Industrial Area near Metro supermarket at Yelachenahalli. Police sub-inspector A N Ashok Kumar and constable M G Gowda Abijith rushed to the spot around 3.30 am.

They directed him to surrender. Dastu attacked Gowda with a dagger and tried to escape. Gowda sustained injuries on his leg, but he held on to Dastu who overpowered him and attacked him with the dagger twice and also tried to attack Ashok Kumar. Kumar then fired at Dastu’s leg in self-defence,” a senior police officer said.
