<p>‘Chandramandala puja’, which is the highlight of the first day of Chikkallur jatra, performed during the full moon day of ‘Maga Masa’ was celebrated in grandeur, in Kollegal taluk on Sunday night.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Thousands of devotees who had gathered unmindful of the chilly night chanting prayers and hymns praising the deity, were excited to watch the glowing ‘Chandramandala’. <br /><br /> Police attempting to control the surging crowd, and heavy rush of devotees rushing towards the fire, were some of the scenes that was observed at the Siddappaji jatra mahotsava at Chikkallur in the taluk.<br /><br />People from across the district and surrounding villages had gathered on the premises to watch the Chandramandala utsava, that is held every year between January 27 and 31.<br /><br />People from Telanuru, Kothanuru, Balagunase, Iridalu, Banuru, Sundralli, Ikkadahalli, Chikkalli had gathered to watch the mandala which is made using coir, bamboo, wood and others, set afire in the night with full moon as the backdrop.<br /><br />Puja<br /><br />After performing puja at the Siddappaji temple, Jnanananda Chinnaraje Urs and troupe, accompanied by traditional musical instruments, tamate and others arrived at the spot and set it afire amid the chanting of the devotees.<br /><br />The people also threw fruits, javana, coins and grains on the buring fire and fulfilled their vows.<br /><br />It is believed that the side of the ‘Chandramandala’ which burns brighter and wavers is said to be blessed with copious rains and good yield. Hence, the people awaited with enthusiasm to watch which side the flame flickers.<br /><br />Bus service<br /><br />Sufficient KSRTC and private buses plied between Kollegal and other routes for the benefit of the people. <br />Apart from this devotees had also arrived on tempos, cars, autos and other modes of transport.<br />Police security was beefed up under the guidance of DySP Chennabasavanna. <br /><br />Special pujas had been arranged on the second day (Monday) at the temple with hundreds of devotees fulfilling their various vows like urulu seve and tonsuring their heads and offered their obeisance.<br /></p>
