Parties indulge in blame game

On a day the Supreme Court directed Karnataka to release more Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, three major political parties in the Assembly engaged in a blame game finding fault with each other for the worsening crisis.

It all began when JD(S) leader H D Revanna said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance has succumbed to pressure from Tamil Nadu MPs in getting the final award notified.

He said he has received credible information that the Union Law Ministry gave the go ahead for the Union Water Resource Ministry to notify the final award, which, according to him, would go against the interest of Karnataka. Congress leaders have been insensitive to the plight of the basin people, he said.

The Supreme Court, in a recent order, directed the Centre to notify the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal by February 20.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah, in his defence, put the onus on the BJP stating that the counsels representing Karnataka submitted before the Supreme Court in January this year that the State had no objection for notifying the final award.

“Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar admitted this at the floor leaders’ meeting on Wednesday,” Siddaramaiah said.

Later he found fault with JD (S) supremo H D Deve Gowda for not coming to rescue of the farmers of Cauvery basin during his tenure as Prime Minister.

Civil appeal

Then it was the turn of the BJP to blame the Congress for ignoring the State’s plea that the final award should not be notified as a civil appeal was  pending before the apex court.

Minister S A Ramdas blamed the coalition government in 2007 for the present situation by saying the then coalition government remained a silent spectator to turn of events.

Congress leader T B Jayachandra pointed out that the BJP was part of the coalition government.
