A Delhi Police head constable was arrested and suspended for making obscene gestures towards a 33-year-old woman and then threatening to kill her in South Delhi’s Saket. As the woman had snubbed his advances for the last one year, he went into her house to teach her a lesson.
The accused Suraj Pal was a resident of Vikaspuri and was posted at Paschim Vihar police station in west Delhi, a senior police officer said.
He was arrested after the victim, a resident of sector 4 of Pusph Vihar in South Delhi, approached police and alleged that the accused came to her house on Saturday afternoon and then knocked at her doors. As she opened the door to check, Suraj Pal barged into the house, locked the door from inside and tried to grab her but the victim managed to save herself.
She alleged that the accused started doing obscene activities in front of her and abused her for running away from him. When she screamed for help, Suraj Pal threatened her of dire consequences, warning her to keep quiet as he himself was a police official.
The traumatised victim cried for help continuously following which the neighbours broke in and nabbed the cop.
“We received a call regarding the incident and immediately sent a police team over there. Suraj Pal was apprehended from the spot,” said the officer.
He was sent for medical examination as he appeared to be drunk. The reports confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol.
“On the statement of the victim, we have registered a case under section 451 (trespassing a house in order to commit offence), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman through words or gestures) of Indian Penal code at Saket Police Station,” said the official.
The accused was arrested and later released on bail. During interrogation, he revealed that he had an infatuation for the woman for the last one year. However, he was snubbed by her each time he tried to approach her.
“Irritated over this, he went to her house to talk to her but got furious and behaved in such a manner,” added the officer.
The police official informed his senior about the incident following which Suraj Pal was suspended and an inquiry was initiated against him.
