Three assembly constituencies in West Bengal went to by-polls Saturday. About 10 percent votes were cast till 9 a.m., an Election Commission official said.
The by-elections are being held at Nalhati in Birbhum district, Rejinagar in Murshidabad district and English Bazar in Malda district of the state.
The by-elections were necessitated after the sitting Congress legislators from Rejinagar and English Bazar left the party and joined Trinamool Congress.
The assembly seat at Nalhati fell vacant after Congress legislator Abhijit Mukherjee won the election at Jangipur parliamentary seat that was vacated by his father Pranab Mukherjee who was elected the President of India.
Nalhati seat, having an electorate of 176,536, has eight contestants in the fray, while Rejinagar with an electorate of 189,100 witnessed 10 contestants. The English Bazar seat has six contestants and has an electorate of 208,204.
