Hundreds of devotees took a holy dip in the confluence of three rivers at the temple town of Tirumakudalu in T Narsipur taluk of the district on the second day of the ninth Kumbha Mela, a miniature version of the mega religious event at Allahabad, on Sunday.

Saints and seers led the gathering of the faithful in taking the holy bath at the convergence of rivers Cauvery, Kapila and Spatika, which is an invisible river. The devotees also took part in various rituals like homas, havanas and abhishekas to deities organised as part of the mega event.

Suttur seer Shivarathri Deshikendra, Nirmalanandanatha of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Shivanandapuri Swami of the Mysore branch Mutt of the Kaginele Peetha and other religious heads had congregated at the temple town for the event. However, politicians were conspicuous by their absence.

Special poojas were held at the ancient temples of Gunja Narasimhaswami and Agasthyeshwara on the banks of the river. Religious programmes were held in the artificial island created in the middle of the river. Coracles had been arranged for devotees to reach the venue.

Barricades have been erected so that devotees don’t venture into the middle of the river where it is deep. Special bus arrangements have been made between Mysore and Tirumakudalu.

Devotees had a difficult time as they had to walk for 2 km to the venue from where buses were allowed to be parked.

The Health department had set up four booths to administer polio drops to children coming for the programme. A large number of devotees are expected for the last day of the event on Monday. Adequate security arrangements are in place to prevent any untoward incident.
