The much-awaited ‘Design Dapple 2013’, the graduation ceremony-cum-fashion show by the graduating students of Army Institute of Fashion and Design (AIFD), recently took place at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall.

At the graduation ceremony, certificates were presented to the PG diploma students, while special awards were handed to those who have excelled in specific fields. The ‘Best Designer’ award was bagged by Karthick Obly, while Gunkiran Bhuttar took home the ‘Best Creation’ award.

Tanya Sinha, of batch 2009-2012, received the prestigious ‘Chief of Army Staff All Round Best Student Rolling Trophy’. “It was a big surprise for me because I just came to meet my juniors and see this year’s collection. But I feel fantastic and am glad I made it today. It gives more meaning to my college life,” shares the elated graduate.
Mahima Singh won not only the ‘Best Outgoing Student’ award but also the ‘Institute Topper’ award. “It feels really amazing. I never saw this day coming when I first stepped into the institute, but it has helped me become who I am. I’m very confident about taking on the industry, but I’m going to miss my friends and faculty members, who have been a great support system for me,” she says.

On the occasion, the eighth batch of students from the PG diploma in ‘Fashion Design’ and sixth batch of BSc ‘Fashion and Apparel Design’ presented the collections they have worked on in their final year. Young boys and girls dressed in their best attire ran about, ensuring that there was no glitch in the showcase. And there wasn’t; on the contrary, everyone appreciated the effort, styles and professionalism shown by the students, who proved their worth.

Through each of the collections, the cheering audience was taken through the creativity of the individual designer. From Alka Rawat’s ‘Laced Out’ collection using shoelaces to Manisha Yadav’s ‘Jute is Cute’ retro capes; from Gunkiran Bhuttar’s use of tribal motifs in ‘Tribal Queen’ to Pooja Chowdhury’s vibrant designs incorporating Bushman art; each one had his or her own inspiration and vision displayed through the collection.

“It was a really nice opportunity for us to get hands-on experience and put our learning to the test. I’ve struggled day and night to make my collection a reality. To see my friends model in my outfits and the audience liking it was the best feeling ever,” smiles Geetha A V, who presented her evening gowns in her collection, titled ‘Red Romance’.

An apt ending to the wonderful phase of college, the graduating batch, their juniors and seniors, faculty members and parents were all visible overwhelmed and parted ways with fond memories to take back.
