Protest over patient's death

Last Updated 20 October 2009, 19:50 IST

Tension prevailed when relatives of the deceased - Abdul Sait , a resident of Bismillah Nagar, Guruappannapalya - accused the hospital of medical negligence and started protesting.

According to Asif Sait, the patient’s son, his father had suffered a stroke leading to paralysis, on October 10. He was then immediately admitted to the hospital, however, they were told that neurologist was available at that time.

After pleading and speaking to the neurologist over the phone, the doctor came at 2 am to check on Sait. “He told us that no one dies of paralysis and said that my father’s right hand and left leg had stopped functioning, hence he didn’t give any medicines,” Asif recalled.

The doctor said he would come on Sunday but didn't come. On October 12, when Sait's condition deteriorated, the hospital prepared to conduct surgery on him.

However, while taking him to the operation theatre, the lift in which he was taken reportedly got stuck. After nearly two hours, when he was rescued, he was immediately taken for surgery.

However, due to brain  haemorrhage, his father went into a coma, Asif said. “He was in coma for ten days. But today my brother saw him and his temperature was below normal indicating that he had died in the morning. The hospital staff, however, denied saying that he was still alive,” he said.

The family has lodged a complaint with the Tilak Nagar police and also served a legal notice. The hospital, however, denied the occurrence of any such incident.
