Treat all corruption cases alike: Hegde

Last Updated 01 March 2013, 19:41 IST

It is necessary to strike at the root of corruption and no distinction should be made between a small and a big case of corruption, said former Lokayukta of Karnataka, N Santosh Hegde.

Delivering the R Gundu Rao Memorial Lecture at the Regional Institute of Co-operative Management in the City on Thursday, Hegde espoused the ideals needed in the governance of the State. “The process of governance needs transparency and accountability whereas the content of governance requires it to have values and equality,” he said.

In light of growing corruption cases like in the Commonwealth games, 2G spectrum case and Coalgate there is an urgent need to check them, Hegde said.

Observing that democracy is far from what it was originally meant to be, he claimed that it was often reduced to the indiscriminate will of the majority and taken to extreme lengths.

“How far democracy has been people centric is for everyone to judge”.
