The High Court, on Friday, granted an interim stay on criminal procedings against Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Hearing a petition by Owaisi, who had moved the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash the procedings against him, Justice K N Keshavanarayana granted interim stay.

The City’s first Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court had issued summons against him with a direction to appear personally before the court in connection with a complaint filed by two City-based advocates, K Dilip Kumar and S Dharmapal.

On February 23, the court had issued summons for Owaisi appear before it. He had refused on the grounds of ill-health. The petitioners, in their complaint dated January 4 had stated that the speech hurt the sentiments of people and would divide the country, and sought to prosecute him.
