Safe cab management system kickstarts

Last Updated 01 March 2013, 20:59 IST

Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Friday inaugurated and flagged off a safe ‘cab management system’ at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Prepaid taxi service was introduced at the airport by traffic police in 1986, but now safety features like identified drivers and registered cabs are being provided to passengers to add comfort and safety norms.

“The new system has been launched at Terminal 3 and shall be rolled out from Terminal 1 shortly,” said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

Tata Consultancy Services, which has devised a software and application hardware, also explained the safety features like bio-metric IDs, tracking drivers and passengers.

At present, prepaid taxi and autorickshaw fare system is operating from 19 locations in Delhi.

Only prepaid taxis are available at the airport, while both taxis and autorickshaws are available at railways stations and 30 lakh commuters are served annually.

A surcharge of Rs 5 for auto and Rs 10 for taxi is levied for administrative maintenance of the system.
