In yet another suspected honour killing in Uttar Pradesh, a man allegedly beheaded his own sister over a love affair and then walked to the police station with her head.

The only fault of 20-year-old Mehrunnisa (name changed) was that she had insisted on marrying her lover, while her family members opposed her marriage with a man 30 years older to her.

According to reports, Mehrunnisa, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, was having an affair with the man for the past two years. Her family members wanted her to marry the person chosen of their choice, but she refused.

A panchayat had also been convened to discuss the matter in the village on Friday, but it remained inconclusive, sources said.

Mehrunnisa reportedly had an heated exchange with her brother Nanke on Saturday over the issue. Enraged over her refusal, Nanke chopped off her neck using an axe.

Though a villager informed the police, Nanke walked into the police station carrying the head, much to the shock of the cops. He was immediately arrested.

“We suspect it to be a case of honour killing. The body has been sent for post-mortem”, said police station in-charge Yaseen Malik. The victim’s father Jhabbar has lodged an FIR naming his son in the murder.

Only a few days ago, an 18-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her brother in Meerut district after she refused to desert her lover. The culprit admitted to the murder.

This is the third such incident in past two months in the eastern UP region.

Even in the third incident, the alleged culprit had surrendered before the police after killing his daughter over a love affair.
