Deputy commissioner M V Savithri said officials should strive towards conducting free and fair Assembly elections.

Speaking at a meeting on Assembly elections at the district administration auditorium here on Monday, Savithri said, officials from all departments should cooperate and coordinate to complete the election process without any hassle.

“The police department, in association with the excise department, should check illegal liquor sales and distribution among voters,” she said.

She said, model code of conduct should not be violated. “The election commission has initiated awareness programmes to clear confusion and problems regarding voters list as well as participation in polling activities. A district-level committee has been formed under Zilla Panchayat CEO to execute the programmes,” she said.

ZP CEO M R Somashekarappa, at a meeting held at ZP, said the district-level committee will come up with plans to make sure that every eligible resident is provided an opportunity to vote. Members of the committee will start ‘voting rights awareness campaign’ to educate residents about the importance of participation in the election process.

He instructed officials and members to take up effective programmes to create awareness about inclusion of names in voters list.
