A 30-year-old man, who shot his wife dead at the entrance of east Delhi’s Karkardooma Metro station, was found hanging on a tree at Muradnagar railway station in Uttar Pradesh. Police suspect he committed suicide.

Pawan Kumar, a resident of New Usmanpur, was absconding after he killed his 29-year-old wife Deepti and critically injuring her father Bishan Das, 55, on Tuesday. His body was found by a Government Railway Police officer on Wednesday morning.

“We suspect Pawan was mentally disturbed and took a bus to Muradnagar. His body was handed over to his family by UP Police. We have no clue about the sequence of events after he left the shoot-out spot,” said Sanjay Bhatia, additional deputy commissioner of police (railway).

Pawan was involved in a divorce case with Deepti, who lived with her parents at Chirag Dilli in south Delhi. He opened fire when Deepti and her father were returning home after the hearing in the case at Karkardooma Court.

The couple apparently had a quarrel after the hearing, following which Deepti and her father left for Metro station in a rickshaw. Pawan followed them in his Maruti Alto car to the Metro station.

“Pawan followed them till the entrance of the station. Then, he parked his car and followed them to the escalator at gate number 1 on the ground floor. He then fired five bullets at them before fleeing the spot,” a police officer said.

While Deepti sustained a fatal gunshot, her father sustained three bullet injuries. The fifth bullet, reportedly, hit a wall.

A police control room vehicle took them to Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan, where Deepti was declared brought dead. Her father was later taken to Deepak Memorial Hospital and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

Police recovered five spent shells and a 12 bore double-barrel rifle from the spot. Pawan’s car was also found parked outside the station.

The couple got married nine years ago and had two daughters. Two years ago, he had opened a readymade garments showroom, but closed it after incurring heavy losses.

His father, Karan Singh Premi, retired as deputy director from the Delhi government’s revenue department. Premi has been the owner of the licensed gun, used in the crime, for the past 15 years.
