<p> The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled a record traffic of 37.04 million tonnes of cargo in the financial year 2012-13, as against the 32.94 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2011-12, thus registering a growth of 12.43 per cent, said NMPT Chairman P Tamilvannan.<br /><br />Addressing media persons on Thursday, the NMPT chairman said that traffic handled by the NMPT is the highest quantity of traffic ever handled at the Port. The NMPT, for the eighth consecutive year, has crossed a net surplus of Rs 100 crore (surplus of Rs 138 crore). At a time when the total traffic of major ports during the current fiscal year has gone down drastically, the NMPT has achieved the record tariff, he said.<br /><br />Briefing about the cargo traffic during the current financial year, he said the growth has been achieved mainly because of the increase in handling of coal, POL crude and products, coal, maize, containerised cargoes etc. </p>.<p>Though there were initial apprehensions over quantity of cargo handling due to the reduction in iron ore transaction from the port, the apprehensions were cleared due to the MRPL importing large quantity of crude oil, petroleum products, increased railway traffic, transportation of coal, maize etc. </p>.<p>Making some of the major announcements, Tamilvannan said the Port Trust Board has approved the proposal of creation of General Insurance Fund in respect of Port assets with an initial corpus of Rs 10 crore. </p>.<p>The construction work of 14 meter deep POL berth is taken up at a cost of Rs 79 crore. The civil work of the project is completed, adding 7.80 million tonnes capacity per annum. The trial run for the Single Point Mooring (SPM) commissioned by MRPL has been completed and the facility is expected to add 18 million tonnes of additional capacity per annum, he said.<br /><br />“Another important developmental project is taken up by the NMPT is the construction of new multi-purpose berth No 18 for handling general cargo containers. The work has received approval from the Shipping Ministry and the tender process will begin soon. <br /><br />The project of setting up of Bulk Cement Terminal by Ambuja Cements at a cost of Rs 95 crore is expected to be commissioned soon. The Port has also signed an MoU with ONGC, BPCL and Mitsui for carrying out feasibility study on developing LNG Terminal,” the NMPT chairman told. The Port has handled 15 cruise vessels in 2012-13 with 10,196 passengers arriving at Mangalore. <br /></p>
