Once operational Qazigund, situated about 80 kms from Srinagar, would be India’s highest-altitude-station.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi is also likely to attend the programme, which will be attended by Kashmiri leaders including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and central ministers Farooq Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad. With opening of the 18-km line, the valley will be linked to its capital Srinagar and other important places, and the trains are expected to chug at a speed of 100 km per hour instead of the present 80 km.

At present, the train runs up to Anantnag and is extremely popular among the local people as it has one-minute-stop in important stations like Awantipora and Bejbehara.
