Drunken brawl ends in murder

An octogenarian who ran a small makeshift shop in Cubbonpet Circle was killed in a drunken brawl on Sunday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Venkataswamy, 80, a resident of Nagarthpet.
On Sunday evening, Venkataswamy and his friend  Lakshman, 40, an employee at a garment factory, consumed liqour together.  The two left the shop and began to fight on the street corner.

Lakshman struck Venkataswamy with an iron rod lying on the road. Passersby rushed Venkataswamy to a private hospital nearby. He was later shifted to Niimhans where he succumbed to his injuries, said police.

Ulsoor Gate police have arrested Lakshman. Lakshman claimed that Venkataswamy had abused women passing on the street. When Lakshman protested, Venkataswamy allegedly slapped him. Lakshman claimed that he had hit Venkataswamy with the iron rod in a fit of rage, said police. Venkataswamy hailed from Turuvekere in Tumkur district.
