Last Updated 18 May 2009, 18:17 IST

The chairmen and vice-chairmen numbering over 100 were political appointees and were appointed by Mayawati after her impressive victory in the 2007 assembly polls.

According to official sources here, these chairmen and vice-chairmen had been directed to submit their resignations forthwith. Soon after her anointment as chief minister, Mayawati, in her bid to expand her support base among the upper castes and Muslims, had appointed a large number of Brahmins, Thakurs, Muslims and OBCs as chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state owned corporations.

These appointees had been entrusted with the responsibility to ensure victory of the BSP candidates in the Lok Sabha elections. The appointees included many leaders of other political parties, who had defected to BSP after the 2007 polls, for greener pastures. As they failed to deliver, such an action was being expected in the BSP circles.
