Belakinedege
Kannada (C) ¬¬¬
Director: Ajay Kumar A J
Cast: Master Chiranjeevi, Master Manju, Master Shyam, Karibasavaiah, Ramakrishna and others

As with many films of its ilk, Belakinedege too had its share of delays and differences of opinion. That the film was not bogged down is an achievement by itself. At times appearing to be honest and at others, a plate of state-sponsored educational films, Belakinedege is the story of slum children whose ambition to study and learn things is realised, leading to a vast improvement in their lives.

That the clash between the uncouth, dirty slum children and the posh, city kids over things like treating a mad man, marching a parade etc is a given to the point of getting stereotyped. The director’s dialogues peppered with words that normally children of the lower strata are not familiar with, is one of the drawbacks. However, the energy brought in by these young actors propels the film along. Leading the adults is Karibasavaiah, who takes the final bow from his audience with this film, throwing in a song bit for good measure. Champa Shetty, Kashi, Mohan Juneja, Ramakrishna, Gururaj Hoskote and Suchitra give good company.

Belakinedege, made with the sole purpose of spreading the message of waging war against alcoholism, shooing apathy in healthcare while initiating rainwater harvesting etc succeeds in its mission fairly. Some of the government schemes get highlighted too. Music by Kumar Eshwar passes muster while Gundlupete Suresh’s camera gives a realistic feel .Editing is also sharp.

School kids, and people still naive to think the world holds innocence and beauty in large measure, will love the film.
