Give more weightage to Trai: JPC

Last Updated 21 April 2013, 19:40 IST

The draft Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on 2G allocation has said Trai recommendations should be given more weightage while dealing with telecom related issues.

“An independent regulator cannot be effective if its recommendations are to be left entirely at the mercy of the government,” the draft report said.

The JPC draft report has failed to come up with any specific recommendations to address the issues haunting the telecom sector. Except some recommendations the panel failed to make any concrete suggestions on crucial issues like allocation of spectrum and its pricing in coming days.

While calling for strengthening the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Act, the draft report said Trai Act should be amended to incorporate provisions to ensure that a harmonious balance is maintained between the Regulator and the Licensor while treating the recommendations from Trai.
