A six-year-old girl was found naked and critically injured in a public toilet at south-east Delhi’s Badarpur on Friday. Police suspect that she may have been dumped after being raped.

The victim has been identified as a resident of Gautampuri slum clusters. Police have questioned around 22 people and detained the public toilet’s contractor. Police learnt about the incident after a call was made to them around 4 pm.

“When a police team reached the spot, they found a girl lying unconscious,” a police officer said. The girl was immediately rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre. “She had injury marks on her neck, and bloodstains were discovered on her body,” the officer added.
A medical examination has also been conducted to confirm the possibility of rape. “It is believed that the girl was raped and the accused also tried to kill her,” the police officer said.

Three-hour long surgery

Chief of trauma centre M C Mishra said the girl’s condition is serious but stable in the ICU. “Doctors had to perform a life-saving surgery that lasted nearly three hours,” said Mishra.
“There is severe damage to the anal canal and doctors had to perform a colostomy to create space for passing stools, apart from dressing to contain infection and clean dead tissues,” he added.

The girl also had a sharp cut on her neck that doctors stitched, he said. The doctors permitted police to take the girl’s statement, but she only informed about her residential address. The girl was unable to give more details about what happened with her, but on the basis of the information, her family was traced.

Her family members told police that she went missing while playing outside her house around 3.30 pm. Her family members tried to find her, but they failed. “They were informed about the incident in the evening,” the officer added.

A case under appropriate sections of the India Penal Code has been registered against unknown persons. “We will take the victim’s full statement after she is declared fit by doctors,” the officer said.

Investigating officers hope to fetch more details about the accused through the statement.
