Badarpur girl's condition stable after surgery; protests continue

Last Updated 27 April 2013, 21:59 IST

The condition of the six-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted inside a public toilet at south-east Delhi’s Badarpur is stable, doctors at AIIMS said on Saturday.

She has a sharp cut on her neck, which has been operated, due to which she is not able to swallow food. “She is stable right now and is still in the ICU at the Trauma Centre,” a doctor said.

While no arrest has been made in connection with the incident, police have registered a case of rape and attempt to murder.

Scores of people have been detained and questioned to identify the person who brutalised the girl.

The victim’s family hails from Uttar Pradesh and has been living in a slum cluster near National Thermal Power Corporation plant for the past 25 years. The girl has seven other siblings.

A police officer said the slum where the girl lives does not have an assured supply of water and dwellers go the nearby public toilet, where the girl was found.
On Friday afternoon, too, she had gone to take a bath where the accused allegedly overpowered and raped her.

She was spotted by another person who had gone to use the toilet. Registering their protests against the incident and other similar ones, a large number of people blocked parts of Mehrauli-Badarpur Road on Saturday. They also blocked the traffic for about an hour and demanded immediate action from the administration.

Similar protests were held across the Capital this week after a five-year-old girl was gang-raped at Gandhi Nagar.
