A five-year-old girl from Nepal was raped by her neighbour in south Delhi’s Chirag Delhi on Wednesday morning, police said.

The accused also attempted to have unnatural sex with the girl because of which she has suffered injury in her private parts, they said. The victim is undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre.

“The condition of the girl was stated to be stable and her statement has been recorded,” said a senior police officer.

On the basis of her statement in which she identified the accused, a case under section 376 (rape) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, has been registered at Malviya Nagar police station.

Vijay, a native of Rourkela in Odisha, who attempted to flee the capital after committing the crime, was arrested at a railway station. He works as a delivery boy at a restaurant in Chirag Delhi.

During interrogation, he told police that he sexually assaulted the girl after luring her to his room on the pretext of giving her a chocolate. Her parents and brother, who are daily wage labourers, were out for work when the incident took place.

“Since Vijay was her next door neighbour and she used to call him uncle, the girl went to his room when he promised her a chocolate,” said the officer. “He locked the room from inside and raped her. He also attempted to have unnatural sex with her and gagged her mouth when she tried to scream for help,” the officer added.

When the accused saw her bleeding and crying, he fled. Hearing her scream, some women from the neighbourhood rushed to help her and made a call to the police control room.

A PCR van and officers from the local police rushed the victim to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The victim’s family members were informed about the incident, following which they immediately arrived at the hospital, the officer added.
