A 55-year-old MCD officer is battling for life after being shot at by two persons, including a colleague, in north east Delhi’s Nand Nagri on Saturday morning, police said.

The victim has been identified as Kunwarpal Singh, who works as an assistant inspector with north zone. “He is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital, and his condition is stated to be critical,” a police officer said.

Police have arrested Kunwarpal’s colleague Sandeep over his statement with Nand Nagri police station. Police said Kunwarpal was going to report to his duty in Shahdara when the attack occurred. At around 6.30 am, he was waylaid by two motorcycle-born armed assailants when he reached near Nand Nagri Block-A.

“A minor argument ensued between them after which the assailants whipped out a pistol and pumped a bullet into his chest,” the officer added.

After opening fire, the assailants fled the spot leaving behind Kunwarpal in a pool of blood. Locals immediately informed police and rushed him to nearby Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

He was later referred to Sushruta Trauma Centre, and then to Apollo Hospital. Police have recorded Kunwarpal’s statement and filed a case of attempt to murder with Nand Nagri police station.

Kunwarpal named one of his colleagues, Sandeep as suspect. During the course of investigation, police learnt that the victim and Sandeep had a heated argument recently in office. “We suspect that it might have driven Sandeep to take revenge,” the officer said.
