Family found respite by chaining him as he was found straying

Close on the heels of an elderly woman being rescued from streets, a 40-year-old man chained at his house in Mandi Mohalla in the city, was rescued on Wednesday.

The victim identified as Ramesh is said to be mentally unsound, and he was forcibly kept in a restricted area, by his mother and wife.

Following a report aired on a private Kannada channel about ‘a man chained at his house’, Mandi police rushed to the house where they found Ramesh’s left leg and left hand tied with an iron chain and locked to an iron ring affixed to the staircase of the two storeyed building. According to his family, they decided to “end his habit of disappearing from the house for many days” by chaining him. They said that it was the “only way” to make sure he stayed in the house.

They said, he had on earlier instances gone to places like Kerala and Chamarajangar where he was found to be working as an agricultural labourer. This, despite him being married.

Ramesh who is married to Lakshmi, has a 10-year-old daughter, and mother Puttalakshmamma. While his younger brother Giri lives in the neighbourhood.

Ramesh’s wife Lakshmi who works as a help at nearby pathology alleged that her husband was creating problems with his “behaviour”.

Ramesh’s mother Puttalakshmamma claimed he was not neglected in any way. He was provided food on time and was freed when he had to bathe and change his clothes. Ramesh has been admitted to psychiatry ward at K R Hospital and his condition is stated to be stable.
