Magistrate opens new prison in Udupi

Delivering the inaugural address, Chengappa said that the inmates in the sub jail will be shifted to the new building within 15 days. He said that the prisoners are facing inconvenience due to lack of space in the old building.

Mangalore Jail Superintendent T P Sheshadri, who is in-charge of the new jail, informed reporters that a new jailor has already been appointed. The District Police will look after the peripheral security of the jail, he added.

Proposal sent
A proposal to appoint 50 workers and officials has already been sent, he said adding that 4 officials have been posted to look after the jail at present.
Deputy Commissioner P Hemalatha, Superintendent of Police Prawin Pawar, MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, Jailor Ambekar and others were present.
The building, which has a basement floor of 5,100 square feet and a ground floor of 10,878, was constructed in 15 acres of land at a cost of Rs 1.86 crore.
The jail building has 6 barracks and 3 cells for male prisoners. Meanwhile, one separate barrack has been provided for women.

Prison capacity
The new jail, which has an intake capacity of 130 prisoners, will lodge undertrials and criminals, who were sentenced upto 6 months in prison.
Meanwhile, those who were awarded life sentence and rigorous imprisonment will be taken to Belgaum and Mysore jails.
The prison comprises of video conference room, interview room, guard room, visitors room, Jailor room, control room, staff room, electrical control room, kitchen, dispensary, store rooms and office and record room.
Currently, there are 70 prisoners in the sub jail.
