Domestic workers' strike on June 16

About 10 lakh domestic workers across the State will go on strike on June 16 to demand better benefits. The National Platform for Domestic Workers has declared a nation-wide strike and asked all domestic workers to not attend work that day.

They demanded Central Legislation for Domestic Workers and other benefits. Karnataka Domestic Workers Movement Project Director A Gayathri said in April they had submitted memorandum of non-negotiable demands to MPs and ministers.

“The demands include helpline to respond to complaints of sexual harassment, fixing of wages, proper leave facilities, provident fund, pension and child care. They are demanding that Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) be extended to domestic workers. Though a National Policy on Domestic Workers to regulate and extend welfare measures has been formulated it is yet to be notified, she said.
