A Delhi Traffic Police head constable was beaten up by two men and a car was run over his leg when he tried to book them for violation of rules in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Nitin and Vikas, residents of Sangam Vihar, have been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident occurred when head constable Prem Sagar, 40, stationed with Mehrauli Circle’s traffic unit, was on duty on Friday.

At around 9.25 am, Prem noticed a Hyundai Santro car being driven recklessly on the wrong side of a road in Sainik Farms.

“The head constable signalled the car to stop on which the driver stopped,” a police officer said. It is, however, claimed that Nitin began to abuse Prem when he was asked to produce his driving licence.

“In a fit of rage, Nitin tried to flee and ran over Prem’s leg when he tried to stop him,” the officer added.

Nitin and Vikas then beat up Prem in full view of public. During the melee, Prem’s colleague, constable Rajiv, informed police the control room and managed to overpower the duo.
Subsequently, they were arrested and a case was lodged with Neb Sarai police station. Both of them face charges of assault, voluntarily causing hurt and obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions under sections 353, 332 and 186 of the IPC.
