HC adjourns hearing on mayoral posts

Last Updated 01 July 2013, 20:02 IST

The High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of a petition seeking reservation for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor after the State government sought more time to announce its decision.

Hearing a petition by Lokesh V Nayaka, seeking to quash the February 25, 2013 order by the State government reserving the posts for general category, and freshly reserve the posts for Schedule Tribes, Justice  L Narayanaswamy directed the State to file its objections.

The petitioner, in his submission, had challenged the validity of the notification issued by the government and had stated that no reservation had been made for Schedule Tribes in any of the14 terms of the civic body.

He stated that it was in violation of the policy of reservation under the KMC Act & Rules. Stating that the order, dated February 8, 2013, was illegal and was opposed to rotation principles adopted by the government, he said it was liable to be quashed.
