Two strangers, who barged into a hospital in the city on Thursday, have decamped with Rs three lakh in cash. The incident that occurred in broad daylight, has sent the hospital staff and cops into a tizzy.

In his complaint to Nazarbad police, Mahesh, pharmacy manager of Shantaveri Gopalgowda Memorial Hospital on Mahadeshwara road (Mysore-T Narsipura road), has stated that, Dhanakeerthi (47) of Hassan had been admitted on June 6. He was suspected to be suffering from H1N1 and blood samples had been sent to NIMHANS, Bangalore.

The infection had been confirmed in the lab report and Dhanakeerthi was under treatment. However, he died on Thursday.

The hospital authorities had issued a bill for Rs 3.19 lakh towards the treatment. Initially, the relatives of the deceased refused to pay such a huge amount, but they relented later and settled to pay Rs three lakh.

Accordingly, when a relative handed over the cash, two miscreants — wearing same colour dress — barged into the reception area where Mahesh was present.

In no time, they snatched the amount after manhandling Mahesh and also ransacked the premises, damaging a computer system, before fleeing the scene. According to the CCTV footage, soon after snatching the cash, the duo handed it over to a man standing outside, suspected to be a relative of Dhanakeerthi, who had paid the medical bill at the hospital a few minutes ago. The miscreants fled in a four-wheeler. A case has been registered.

Dr D G Nagaraj, health officer of MCC, told Deccan Herald, “though Dhanakeerthi was suffering from H1N1, he died of massive heart attack”.
