Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said the Jat community of Haryana is the backbone of the country’s economy.

Addressing the All India Jats Convention at Talkatora Stadium here, she said: “The community is the backbone of our economy as it is deeply involved in agriculture and also rendered substantial contribution to the freedom struggle.”

“Delhi was the first state in the country to grant OBC status to the Jat community, hence enabling them to avail benefits of OBC reservation in government services,” she added.
Quota demand

Congress leader and newly elected Jat Maha Sabha president Amarinder Singh on Friday demanded that the centre should fulfil the community’s long pending demand for reserved category status.

“Our demand for reservation is because of the fact that the Jat community is economically and socially weak. It has been our long pending demand that the community should be included in the list of reserved category. It will enable our youth to get job opportunities in public sector units and other government offices,” Singh said.
Terming the reserved category demand as necessary, the former Punjab chief minister said the community was lagging far behind for years.

Earlier, former women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhary had asked Jat leaders to stop female foeticide and educate the girl child.
