The education system and teaching techniques should be student centered creating interest among students. Teaching techniques should be innovative rather than the traditional method of teaching, said Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P Shivashankar.

He was speaking after inaugurating the regional level science workshop for children at Lions hall in Chikmagalur on Tuesday. He advised the students to develop an attitude to questioning on every subject. The questions that emerge in students mind help a great deal in building their future. Questions lead to creativity and innovation, he said.

On the significance of education in mother tongue, he said children can be talented even by pursuing education in mother tongue. The number of students pursuing their studies in government schools as against private schools was more in the past. However, the students who have studied in private schools opt for government colleges when getting admission to medical courses, the CEO said.

Harish Bhat from Indian Institute of Science said that for a population of 121 crore, there are only 0.5 per cent of scientists, while in USA the scientists population is 40 per cent. Of them, majority of the scientists are from Indian origin. There is a need to give priority for basic science.
