Sappers power past BEL

Last Updated 05 November 2009, 17:02 IST

The Sappers posted a facile 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 win to move to nine points from five matches, the same as SWR.

With no real challenge in sight, MEG didn’t really have to stretch themselves and their strategy remained more or less the same throughout the game. A relatively older BEL side, apart from the first-change spikers Gopi and Sagar, made no real attempt of putting up a fight and instead, they relied on MEG’s errors to notch up some points.
In the first set, BEL ran up a 8-2 lead, but MEG stepped their ante to level the score at 10-10. MEG spikers Ayyappan and Vinod made most of the short-passes to help their side to a 1-0 lead.

BEL’s Gopi tried hard to get his frail smashes past MEG’s blocking duo of Sachin and Prince, but his efforts went in vain as the score sheet read 10-1 at first time-out in the second quarter. The Sappers, in brief phases, looked as clueless as their rivals. Terrible passes and wayward smashes had pegged MEG back, but a string of powerful smashes and deft drops from Vinod gave them a 2-0 lead.

With dark clouds hovering overhead, MEG, finally, urged three of their spikers to move to the front-line. Vinod, on the left, bruised and battered BEL blockers with his fierce smashes while Ayyappan and Prince took turns on the right to complete the win.
