The holidays have commenced for engineering students studying in colleges affiliated to the VTU and they are making the best use of the long duration to learn new things and enhance their skills.

While some are interning with IT companies, others prefer to relax and spend some time with their families. Many students are also utilising the time to prepare for the competitive exams that they will write in the coming year.

Magesh, a student of New Horizon College of Engineering, says that along with interning with a company, he is also learning a host of other things that will add to his skills and enable him to try his hand at different streams of engineering. “Currently, I am doing a very interesting internship and have also enrolled for different diploma courses. I am also involved in a lot of projects along with my friends and have completed more than five of them. I plan to complete a few more before the college reopens in August,” he says.

It seems like there is a lot more on the minds of students than simply taking a break from the grueling schedule of college. They are keen to learn more as that will add to their CV. Rohan, a second-year engineering student, says that the holidays have given students like him a chance to take up new courses.

However, they are also meeting up with friends and planning outings together to pursue their hobbies such as trekking. “I am about to finish a 3D design course which is related to my branch of engineering. I also plan to take some trips with my friends when the weather is better. I have caught up with my friends, who studied with me in PU college — we plan to have several reunions throughout the holidays.

Meeting old friends was very refreshing. I also have an internship lined up and am looking forward to that,” he says.

Students are also taking time out to volunteer in social activities like cleaning up their locality or spending time with senior citizens.  Sanchay and his friends have volunteered to help senior citizens as well as underprivileged children. “We work for children as well as senior citizen and visit old-age homes in the City during the holidays. Each member dedicates some time to help people in these places. We also collect funds and conduct field work to know their needs and demands,” he says.

The long spell of holidays has been welcomed by the students. Gone are the days when they lazed around during the vacation. Students today are making the most of the time they have in hand.
